Shoebox Mockup

What's inside

Here’s a shoebox mockup that works well for a pattern, merch branding and similar projects.

Useful for product designers as much as for merch brands. Tip: keep your artwork simple. Small objects shrink details quickly, so a bold mark reads better than fine lines.

Small branded items are often the part of an identity that clients remember, so it’s worth showing them properly.

Pixpine created this one and hosts the download on their own site, so you always get the latest version straight from the source.

Editable options in the Shoebox Mockup PSD

The PSD is layered, so you can change:

  • Logo or artwork, placed through the smart object
  • Shadows
  • Object colour, where included
  • Background colour

Editing the Shoebox Mockup, step by step

  1. Prepare the artwork in your brand colours.
  2. Open the file in Photoshop and double-click the smart object thumbnail in the Layers panel.
  3. Paste your design, resize it to fill the area, then save (Ctrl/Cmd + S) and close that tab.
  4. Adjust the shadow so the object sits on the surface.
  5. Export a full-size image for your portfolio and a smaller one for social media.

Worth remembering: change the background colour to your brand palette; it does more for the final image than people expect.

Where the Shoebox Mockup works best

  • Show a pattern to a client before it goes to print or production.
  • Share a small logo on Instagram, Behance or Dribbble with a real-looking preview.
  • Make two or three colour versions of merch branding and let the client pick.

Good to know

  • Made by Pixpine. The download size and format are listed on their page.
  • Some free mockups ask for credit when you post them. A short line in your caption is enough.
  • Built for Adobe Photoshop. A recent CC version handles the smart objects best.

Questions about this mockup

Is it free for commercial use?

Pixpine sets the licence, and it can differ from file to file. Many free files allow personal and commercial use, but some are personal-only or ask for credit. Read the terms on the download page before a paid project.

How do I add my design?

Open the file in Photoshop, double-click the smart object thumbnail, paste or place your artwork in the new tab, save it (Ctrl/Cmd + S) and close. The main file updates on its own.

Do I need Photoshop?

Yes. This is a PSD mockup built with smart objects, so you edit it in Adobe Photoshop. Any recent CC version works.

Can I change the background?

Most object mockups have a background colour or image layer at the bottom of the stack that you can swap.
