Newspaper Ad Mockup

What's inside

  • Applications Photoshop
  • File Types PSD
  • License Free (see author's terms)
  • Author Zippypixels

Show an editorial layout the way it will actually look: on a newspaper ad mockup.

It’s a handy file for ad agencies and editorial designers. One thing worth knowing: keep text at least a few millimetres from the edge. The mockup shows the trim, and cramped margins read as a mistake.

It also makes a good cover image for a Behance or Dribbble post, where the first thumbnail decides whether anyone clicks. For a complete brand board, show it next to a business card and a notebook.

Works well for

  • An editorial layout
  • An ad placement
  • A front page

Zippypixels created this one and hosts the download on their own site, so you always get the latest version straight from the source.

Editable options in the Newspaper Ad Mockup PSD

Main things you can change in Photoshop:

  • Your design, placed through the smart object
  • Front and back artwork, where both sides are shown
  • Paper or background colour

Add your design to the Newspaper Ad Mockup

  1. Export your artwork as a high-resolution PNG or JPG, around 300 ppi at print size.
  2. Open the PSD in Photoshop and find the smart object layer, usually named “Your Design” or “Place Here”.
  3. Drop your artwork in, fit it to the canvas, save and close. The mockup updates by itself.
  4. Export with File › Export › Export As: JPG for sharing, PNG for the web.

One more thing: export your artwork at the size the smart object asks for; scaling a small file up is the usual reason print mockups look soft.

Where the Newspaper Ad Mockup works best

  • Make two or three colour versions of an ad placement and let the client pick.
  • Share an editorial layout on Instagram, Behance or Dribbble with a real-looking preview.
  • Show a front page on your online shop or product page.

Before you download

  • Made by Zippypixels. The download size and format are listed on their page.
  • Check the smart object size before you design, so your artwork fits without stretching.
  • Built for Adobe Photoshop. A recent CC version handles the smart objects best.
  • The preview shows the angle, background and lighting you’ll get.

Questions about this mockup

What licence does it come with?

Zippypixels sets the licence, and it can differ from file to file. Many free files allow personal and commercial use, but some are personal-only or ask for credit. Read the terms on the download page before a paid project.

How do I add my design?

Open the file in Photoshop, double-click the smart object thumbnail, paste or place your artwork in the new tab, save it (Ctrl/Cmd + S) and close. The main file updates on its own.

Do I need Photoshop?

Yes. This is a PSD mockup built with smart objects, so you edit it in Adobe Photoshop. Any recent CC version works.

Can I show both sides?

It depends on the file. Many print mockups include a front and a back smart object; the preview usually shows whether both sides are visible.
