Need to show a gift box design to a client? This open box mockup does the job in a few minutes.

It’s a handy file for e-commerce brands and packaging designers. Tip: render two colour versions side by side. Clients choose faster when they compare.

Packaging is judged on the shelf in a couple of seconds, so seeing the design on the real shape tells you more than the flat dieline ever will.

The file is made by 50graphics. The download button takes you to their page, where you get the original file and the licence details.

Open Box Mockup: editable parts

Everything below is on its own layer:

  • Label or box artwork, placed through the smart object
  • Gloss and highlight layers
  • Base colour of the pack
  • Background colour

Editing the Open Box Mockup, step by step

  1. Finish the label first, with barcode and small print in place.
  2. Open the file in Photoshop and double-click the smart object thumbnail in the Layers panel.
  3. Place your design, hide the sample artwork, save, and go back to the main file.
  4. Check each visible side so the panels line up.
  5. Export with File › Export › Export As: JPG for sharing, PNG for the web.

Check barcodes, weights and small legal text at 100% zoom. Packaging clients always look for those.

Questions about this mockup

Is it free for commercial use?

It's free to download, but the licence belongs to 50graphics. Check their page: it states whether commercial use is allowed and if attribution is needed.

How do I put my artwork on the box?

Find the smart object layer (it has a small icon on its thumbnail), double-click it, place your design, then save and close that tab.

Which Photoshop version do I need?

A recent Photoshop CC version is best. Older versions can open the file but sometimes have trouble with smart objects and effects.

Is the design wrapped around the shape?

Round packs usually use warp or displacement so the label bends with the shape. Flat boxes use separate smart objects for each visible side.

Why does the download open another website?

We list free files from designers around the web and link to the original page, so 50graphics gets the visit and you get the file exactly as they published it.
