Open Matchbox Mockup

What's inside

  • Applications Photoshop
  • File Types PSD
  • License Free (see author's terms)
  • Author Mockups Design

Presenting a gift box design? Put it on this open matchbox mockup and the client sees the real thing, not a flat file.

It’s a handy file for e-commerce brands and subscription box companies. A small tip: build the label or dieline flat first, then place it; bending text inside the mockup is harder to fix later.

A realistic render saves a round of physical samples, which for packaging can take weeks. A matching label or sticker mockup rounds out the set.

Good for

  • A gift box design
  • A mailer box
  • Product packaging

The file is made by Mockups Design. The download button takes you to their page, where you get the original file and the licence details.

Open Matchbox Mockup: editable parts

Main things you can change in Photoshop:

  • Label or box artwork, placed through the smart object
  • Gloss and highlight layers
  • Shadows
  • Base colour of the pack

Add your design to the Open Matchbox Mockup

  1. Finish the label first, with barcode and small print in place.
  2. In the Layers panel, find the layer with the small smart object icon and double-click it.
  3. Paste your design, resize it to fill the area, then save (Ctrl/Cmd + S) and close that tab.
  4. Check each visible side so the panels line up.
  5. Export a full-size image for your portfolio and a smaller one for social media.

Worth remembering: check barcodes, weights and small legal text at 100% zoom. Packaging clients always look for those.

Where the Open Matchbox Mockup works best

  • Show product packaging on your online shop or product page.
  • Present a mailer box in a client proposal or brand guide.
  • Make two or three colour versions of a gift box design and let the client pick.

Before you download

  • Made by Mockups Design. The download size and format are listed on their page.
  • Check the licence on the author’s page. Personal and commercial terms differ from file to file.
  • Check the smart object size before you design, so your artwork fits without stretching.
  • Built for Adobe Photoshop. A recent CC version handles the smart objects best.

Questions about this mockup

Can I use this box mockup for client work?

That depends on the author's terms. The download page lists what is allowed; when in doubt, ask the author directly.

How do I put my artwork on the box?

Find the smart object layer (it has a small icon on its thumbnail), double-click it, place your design, then save and close that tab.

Which Photoshop version do I need?

A recent Photoshop CC version is best. Older versions can open the file but sometimes have trouble with smart objects and effects.

Can I change the packaging colour?

Usually yes. There is normally a colour layer under the design smart object, so you can change the base colour without touching your artwork.
